Lumphini Park, Bangkok

We woke up in our lovely Novotel hotel and headed down to breakfast, there was loads to chose from and typically I wasn't hungry, I think the tension of the last couple of days had caught up with me! It was a buffet breakfast, maybe I should say feast. We made our choices and sat down, when out of the corner of my eye two lovely ladies arrived in ball gowns, mmmm I thought a bit overdressed, but then I thought maybe they are here for a photoshoot. We have seen a couple of photoshoots especially at tourist spots like the Taj Mahal. Then they headed to the breakfasts, one chose sausages and beans, yikes that is an accident waiting to happen, sauce stains down your frock, not a good look.  More and more appeared, then one appeared with a sash on but all I could see was Miss, the rest was hidden by her glossy long hair which was draped over her shoulder! So I presume some sort of beauty pageant, a bit surreal so early in the morning and to be frank I felt slightly under dressed in my trekking trousers and baggy t shirt. I hadn't even had a shower as I was going to have a soak in the bath after breakfast.

When it was time to leave the hotel, we had two options get a taxi or try the train. We decided to be brave and take the train which involved us changing twice, when I say train, it was a train that just led to the city, then we had to go on the sky train which is like the Metro in Newcastle but up high, which also involved one change. After a bit of a wander, I say getting lost, David says exploring and more asking directions we managed to reach our hostel. It is lovely, very close to everything but yet quiet. When we got there we were told there was an age restriction, which actually I am in , just, but David was out of, just. They let us stay though and we promised to behave and not to cramp the younger ones style!

After dropping our stuff off we headed to Lumphini park,  sometimes spelled Lumpini , which is named after the birthplace of Buddha, Lumbini. At the entrance of the park there is a lovely statue which has been decorated with yellow flowers. Yellow and orange flowers are often used by Hindus and Buddhists.

We found a supermarket on the way to the park, so went in and bought some stuff for a picnic. It is a family tradition to try and get Lays crisps when we are abroad, we bought these ones, seaweed flavour, which actually were quite nice.

David went looking for a geocache while we were at the park, while he was doing that I noticed the size of the leaves on some of the trees , they were huge. Strangely the trees themselves weren't that big compared to the leaves.

Some of the wildlife we saw in the park.

A big lizard, Komodo dragon type thing! Saw several of these.

The same type of lizard climbing a tree, this one was smaller though.

We also saw two different types of big fish, one was catfish, a squirrel which was very dark brown and had a white tipped tail, and loads of different birds.

The park itself is lovely and covers a huge area, it has lots of different trees and a couple of lakes. Lots of people go there to do keep fit activities with a wide range of abilities, ages and sizes being
seen, but all seemed quite happy to mix with each other. There was a big open air Zumba class going on, with over a hundred people taking part.  It was nice to go there and just chill out, think we will be going there again over the next few days.
